Pillow Talk
The fall to me is a great time to do a bi-annual clean up and one of the areas that I’ve recently upgraded are my bedding. Everything from sheets, duvet, duvet cover and maybe most importantly pillows.
According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA), we should be replacing our pillows every two years or sooner. This is because pillows can get pretty dirty. As pillows reach the end of their lifecycle, they can contain allergens like pet dander, dust mites, and even mold. Now that gives dust mites something to snack on, doesn’t it. I know. Gross!
Here are a few recommendations I can make if you’re looking to switch out your pillows for something you might like more and perhaps increase the life of your pillows.
Buy pillow protectors.
These are relatively inexpensive (link to Amazon) and give an added layer of protection to your pillows. They come in a variety of sizes and with different attributes to help prolong the life of your pillow.

These aren’t waterproof, but I feel more comfortable being able to toss them in the wash frequently. Waterproof protectors don’t seem as easily cleaned as these and you can’t beat the cost.
Satin pillow cases.
Satin or silk pillow cases can be an investment, however, I’ve found some great ones that are low cost, low maintenance and have extended the length of a professional blow dry as well. These pillow cases are also very easy on your skin, especially if you’re a side sleeper like I am and half of your face is mushed into the pillow for most of the time you’re in bed.
These come in a wide variety of colors at a great price. I don’t expect these to last forever, so I buy multiples to have on hand for me and my guests.
Wash pillow cases and covers often.
I wash both my pillow cases twice as often as I wash my sheets. In doing so, I lower the chance of stains appearing or other debris and dirt that can affect your facial skin and hair.
Look for washable pillows.
A quick search can lead you to a variety of washable pillows that come in all kinds of different materials from goose feathers to foam. I love a washable pillow, because it’s an easy way to keep the dust and mites out of your pillows by washing them in warm water.
Pillows are obviously a personal buying decision, but I just have replaced all of my pillows with these and you can’t beat the price. I love them so I’d give it a go – or do your research and find the best pillow for you and your needs!
