10 Steps to Foolproof Decorating - Step 7: Wallpaper
I am so pleased that wallpaper is having a moment right now. I always have felt it brings so much character to a room. Although every room doesn't need and probably shouldn’t have wallpaper, there are some that just scream for it.
Entryways
A foyer is a great place to bring some color and pattern to a home. It’s the first impression and makes a statement about what’s to come, right from the get go. Here’s a picture of my entryway before and after and the wallpaper is the star of that show.
Bathrooms
I love the way this Luzon wallpaper looks in this bathroom. It’s a contender for my new Boston condo in Back Bay for the entryway. I’ve chosen paint colors of Benjamin Moore’s Simply White for walls, Sherwin Williams, Proper Gray for trim and Sherwin Williams, Tricorn Black.
Dining Rooms
I had a subtle damask wallpaper in a dining room once and although it was very neutral the pale pattern made the room stand out. Some wallpapers can be fun and more bold, but others – a neutral palette is best.
Studys
Again, I contradict myself. I had a study once that had deep red wallpaper and I loved it. It made the room feel so cozy and warm. Bathrooms are another place you can go bold in your paint or wallpaper. Wish I had a picture of this to show you, but I don’t.
Accent Walls
Some people love a good accent wall . . . or three. I think they can work well if they look intentional and connect with one another. Behind a headboard for instance. If one wall in a kitchen for instance is used, it might be nice to incorporate the wallpaper to the back of a cabinet that has glass doors. That’s intentional and interesting.
Wallpaper is a form of art for our walls. If you have a lot of artwork you’d like to display on your walls, you may not want a busy wallpaper pattern. So much of this is personal choice and preference. I say, go for it and try it out in a small space to see if you like it. Wallpaper is fun – it’s like the gift wrapping of a present! Have fun. Try something new!
