Spring is Here! Let’s Clean Up and Pull the Place Together!

I’m overjoyed that Spring has sprung and now that I’m seeing buds on the tree outside my window and flowers poking up at the Boston Garden, I know great weather is right around the corner. Given my enthusiasm, I want to share with you all what's been on my agenda since turning seasons. Next week, I’ll promise I’ll get back to Part 3 of Easy Upgrades to Builder Grade or Dated Homes!

Is it me, or are you getting itchy to open the windows up and let in the fresh spring air? This past week has been a very cold one here in Boston, but overall we’ve had a great winter (meaning very mild).

That makes me feel motivated to clean up – as in a deeper clean than usual. Here are a few things I’m going to be doing myself or hiring a professional to do some of it.

Cleaning my area rugs

They’ve been put through the ringer with construction going on nearly non-stop for months last year, so it’s time I show them some love. Many local companies have great deals on carpet and upholstery cleaning and I’m here for it. My sofa could also use a good cleaning. I may attempt to take the slip covers off myself and give it a go. If that doesn’t do the job, I’ll bring in a pro.

Tacking the corners of some area rugs

You know the ones, they just don’t lie flat. The runner in my kitchen can drive me crazy. So frustrating. After the rug cleaning, I’ll go ahead and use a couple of >>these babies<< and be good to go!

Showing some love to my butcher block countertops

My usual go to is to dilute a little of >>Mrs. Meyer’s Liquid Dish Soap<< in Apple Cider on a warm face cloth and wipe down my countertops.

I’ve gotten a lot of feedback about my >>herringbone countertops<< (so affordable and were purchased at Lowes) about how great they look, but am I worried of dings and dents happening to them.

Not at all. I think that’s what adds to the character of a kitchen with wood countertops. I do like to keep them clean, however!

Freshen up the air

Spring has a scent to it, right? Like most seasons, I associate a certain smell with a season. I’m not a fan of mainstream air fresheners with strong scents that for me cause a deluge of sneezing.

Instead, I did some research and learned that we can all make our own air freshener sprays using one cup of water, two tablespoons of either vodka or rubbing alcohol and a combination of 15 drops of essential oils. My faves are lavender, lemon, mint and rosemary. It’s best to put in a non-clear glass bottle to maintain the scent longer.

I like >>this option<<, so you can mix a batch up and keep one in every room!

Bringing in fresh flowers

I’m not against a great faux flower or plant. In fact, I love them in certain situations and places, however, when the season starts to turn from winter to spring, I’m all about the tulips, sunflowers, peonies and thankfully, if you’re near a Trader Joe’s they’re pretty plentiful and affordable. For me, it changes and elevates a space immediately.

No one to buy you flowers? In the words of Miley Cirus “I can buy myself flowers . . .” and I hope you do!

Happy Spring everyone!
