10 Steps to Foolproof Decorating - Step 5: Function

I’m all for beautiful decor, don’t get me wrong. But, the function of a room needs to be considered above all. All of the great design in the world won’t cure if a room functions properly for your needs.

Ask yourself:

What is the primary purpose for the room?

Does it need to serve other functions as well?

If so, what?

Is it possible to accommodate both (i.e. a guest room and an office)?

Should furniture be arranged differently to allow for a better traffic flow? Will the size and proportion of furnishings be adequate (or too big) for the space. Marking things down on the floor to see the actual size of furnishings will help.

I recently worked with clients who are doing a major renovation on their home and one would like more of a separation between two rooms than another would prefer. Just by helping solve the furniture layout we were able to come up with a perfect solution that worked for both of them.

Take a newspaper and create the furniture pieces in the sizes you’re interested in having in the room and move things around until you find the floor plan that works best for you and your family. It’s also a lot lighter and easier to move than the real thing!
