Happy Birthday America (& Noah) – A Look at Home Products Made in America

When I first became pregnant with my son Noah, I was beyond thrilled to know his estimated birthday was July 4th. I like to tease him that it’s the only thing he’s done on time . . . and I was induced, but he was born on July 4th which continues to make for extra special birthdays. When he was little, we’d be in a grocery store and he’d look around at all of the red, white and blue decor and ask me “Mom, hoowwww does everyone know it’s my birthday!”  Given that Noah’s birthday is on a national holiday and his first name is Noah (as in THAT Noah) – he seemed like quite the little narcissist!

Every July 4th is a big deal at our home especially since Noah’s birth, however, it’s a wonderful American holiday we all love to celebrate – fireworks and all! Because the holiday is celebrating our independence, I thought it would be only appropriate to look at American Made products for the home that we can celebrate by supporting! Here goes.

Etsy is a resource of so many craftsmen in the United States and throughout the world, but if you’re looking for anything from monogramming your towels to drinking your coffee in a beautiful pottery mug to purchasing handmade furniture, Etsy is a great place to start.

In 2010, Mark Andol, owner of General Welding & Fabricating, Inc. found Made in America Store “for country, for soldier, for American worker, and for our children’s future.” Adol’s mission was to increase manufacturing in the United States and therefore create more jobs. Because of Andol’s efforts his mission is now the reality of a steady paycheck for hard-working Americans. You can order online or visit his store in Elma, New York.

S. Feldman Housewares has been an iconic destination for New York City’s Madison Avenue and Upper East Side residents since the Great Depression. In 1929, Sam Feldman, a Russian immigrant and entrepreneur, founded S. Feldman Housewares, Inc. According to his website, he selected the up-and-coming neighborhood of Carngie Hill and opened a 5, 10 and 25 cent store. For the next 91 years and four generations later, Feldman's continues to serve as a family-owned-and-operated iconic staple of Manhattan's Carnegie Hill and the Upper East Side. They have a reputation for their friendly, knowledgeable staff and unparalleled service to their customers, as well as over 10,000 items from light bulbs to vacuum cleaners to unique gifts—and everything in-between—you'll be sure to find just what you're looking for, and fantastic items you didn't know you needed.

When I lived in Concord, Massachusetts there was a 5 & 10 and the owner would often remind me that “if we don’t have it – you don’t need it!” It was such a town treasure and I was so sad to learn of its closing shortly after I moved to Boston. Thankfully, we have S. Feldman Housewares to visit or order online from.
