Those Dog Days of Summer

Cape Cod

From July 3rd until August 11th, we are in what’s considered the “dog days of summer,” meaning the warmest weather that coincides with the year’s heliacal (meaning “at sunrise”) rising of Sirius, the Dog Star. Sirius got its canine “pet” name as part of the constellation Canis Majoris—the “Greater Dog,” as well as its official name, Alpha Canis Majoris. Sirius is the brightest star in the sky, not including our own Sun. It’s a time when not a lot gets done, simply because it’s too hot or sweltering.

You may be on vacation this time of year and therefore, you’re certainly not focusing on getting things done in your home. Typically, it’s difficult to hire workers during the summer as well, because it may have taken months to book these people in the new year when we were planning on making home improvements.

So, here’s what I say. Take it easy – enjoy the heat (as much as you can) and maybe daydream about future projects, upgrades or renovations you’d like to tackle . . . in the future. Not today.

This may be a great time to scan Pinterest boards, pick up some home improvement and decorating magazines or scroll through blogs or TikTok (don’t get me started – I can’t believe how far the rabbit hole I’ve gone down with TikTok) to gain inspiration and perspective.

Enjoy the time with your family and friends and dream a little about what you may want to improve, upgrade or redo in your home – at some point in the future. If it’s difficult to stay still, summer has a host of sales as well and it might be a great time to do some online shopping for home decor and accessories that will warm your home up come fall. Or not. It’s summer after all.

I’ve been fortunate to have traveled to Scottsdale, Cape Cod (a few times), Brooklyn, Portland Maine and Ogunquit this summer. I’d love to plan more. That’s maybe what I’ll do during these dog days of summer – find new places to go to get inspired.

Enjoy!
