Vacation Shopping

There’s something about being away on vacation that tempts me into shopping.

This year, I’m trying something new. Given that I have more than what I need in my condo, I’m resisting the urge to make any purchases for myself or my home. Here are some things I think are great items to pick up when you’re on vacation and have the urge to shop.

Sniff Factor

That doesn’t mean I’ll avoid shopping at all costs. Most likely, I’ll grab a candle, air freshener, fabric spray or other good smelling item for myself and my home. They make great gifts as well.

Place Settings Everyone

I’ve cautioned my daughter to never register for china if or when she gets married. Instead, it’s great to make a purchase of an interesting place setting in places she might travel to. The memories of your trip will be what you see when you’re dining on your plate from Rome. Purchasing something like this is utilitarian as well.

Artwork

Galleries and local craft shows seem to be in most tourist towns or cities where you can get a great deal on artwork or art pieces that reflect the location you’re visiting. Making your adventure stay with you long after the trip is over.

Bejeweled

These can be found in local stores or craft fairs as well. Who doesn’t love jewelry and the great news is it won’t take up a lot of room in your suitcase. Consider it wearable art.

Hungry Anyone?

Food items are also great things to bring home with you. Infused vinegars, olive oils, spices and teas can easily be found in local grocery stores or farmer’s and open markets. These items won’t last forever, but you can relive one of your dinners from your time away. My daughter and I went to Vietnam a few years ago and took a cooking class together. During the pandemic we recreated that meal a few times – bringing back one of the best experiences from our trip.

Although I mostly did long weekends in New England, I’m planning a trip to Portugal. If you’ve been and can share any pointers – I’d love to hear from you!
