Multi-Functional Spaces & Items

About a year ago I did a webinar on how to get the most use out of your current space given that so many people returned to work from home when Covid hit. I have a friend who was living in a wide open loft space when she, her husband and her daughter all began to work alongside her from this lofty open space. Suddenly, an open concept had some downsides.

Purge

I recently spoke with a professional organizer and knew I’d need her contact information. The first step to making any space functional and beautiful is to dispose of what is no longer of use to you, broken, duplicate, or simply no longer “sparks joy” when you look at it. If you can do it alone, good for you. If you need help, reach out to the National Association of Productivity and & Organizing Professionals. They can find a consultant in your area to help you get this most important job done.

Organize

When you’ve eliminated what no longer serves you, you can begin to organize what you do have and start to put things in their place. There are plenty of gadgets you can find out there and you may have many of those items already. One product I purchased recently and love is from The Home Edit line at Walmart. I used it to organize my jewelry, but the options are endless.

Create Zones

Having zones in your home for specific purposes is a good way to define space that works for you and your family – or just you. I prefer working from my dining room table most days. It’s also where I like to do Zoom calls, etc. It’s set up for this and I can leave these items there during the day, and simply put them away in a nearby cabinet at night.

If you need an extra desk, Pottery Barn has an innovative solution. Look at this!

Double Duty Furniture Pieces

I know first-hand that maximizing space is key in my less than 1000 square foot Boston condo. I found out about these babies and need to get them to replace my current bed risers.

Bed Risers . . . And More!

Can you believe you’ve got electrical outlets and USB ports in bed risers? Genius. How many of us have extension cords for our bedside lights when the only outlet is in the middle of your headboard? Problem solved.

Built-In Storage

Ottomans and coffee tables now have storage space inside. You can find them almost everywhere and are great places to store extra throw blankets, magazines or other unsightly items that don’t need to be seen when not in use. Here’s one I like. Put a tray on it for your remote, drinks, etc. and you’re good to go!

Entryways

If you have an entryway (or even if you don’t) this piece does the trick – with a bench, hooks to hang a hat or bag and even a shoe shelf. The price is right too!

There are so many things to choose from that serve at least two purposes. If you want to simplify your life and have things that are both beautiful and functional, we’ve got many options.
